Deck Caddie DJ vs NXTCue: two ways to pick the next track
Both follow what you are playing and suggest what to play next. The difference is where the suggestion comes from: NXTCue asks an AI provider you connect; Deck Caddie DJ works it out on your Mac from your own library, crates and past gigs, with no AI provider, no API key and nothing to pay per use.
Side by side
| Deck Caddie DJ | NXTCue | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A next-track copilot that learns from your own library, crates and gig history | A desktop companion that gives “AI-powered transition-ready track ideas” for what is playing |
| How it follows what you play | Reads your DJ software’s own library, History and live log files, read-only. It does not listen to audio | Says it “hears what you’re currently playing” and “reads what’s already playing in your software”; the page does not say how |
| Where suggestions come from | Your own proven sequences, plus tracks you own and have not used lately — worked out on your Mac | An AI provider you choose, using your own API key |
| Cost beyond the licence | None. No AI provider, no API key | “AI usage is billed separately by your provider” |
| What leaves your computer | Your library and play history never do. At launch it sends only the app version, a machine ID, your licence e-mail and a few counts | Its page does not say what is sent to the AI provider |
| Offline at a gig | Yes — a brief check at launch, then fully offline | Offline use is not mentioned on its page |
| Price | $39 once (two Macs) or $6.99/month; 3 gigs free | One-time $19 (a $29 price is also shown), “one active device”, no subscription |
| DJ software | Serato DJ Pro, rekordbox 7 | Serato DJ, rekordbox, VirtualDJ, djay Pro, Mixxx |
| Computers | macOS 11 or later | Windows 10 and 11, and macOS |
| Best for | A Mac DJ on Serato or rekordbox who wants suggestions that sound like their own sets | A DJ on other software or on Windows, or who wants AI-generated ideas and is happy to bring a provider key |
NXTCue’s column quotes its own published pages (nxtcuedj.com), read on 19 October 2026; where they say nothing we say so. Details change — check their site for the latest. Deck Caddie is not affiliated with NXTCue, Serato or rekordbox.
Who should pick which
Pick NXTCue if you play on VirtualDJ, djay Pro or Mixxx, if you are on Windows, or if you want AI-generated ideas that are not limited to what you have played before and you are comfortable bringing your own provider key.
Pick Deck Caddie DJ if you play Serato DJ Pro or rekordbox on a Mac and want the next track to come from your own proven sets — including your edits and the songs you own but forgot — working offline, with your library and history staying on your Mac and no per-use cost.
Questions
Is Deck Caddie an AI tool like NXTCue?
Deck Caddie does not call an AI service and needs no API key. Its suggestions are computed on your Mac from your own library, crates and gig history: which songs you have actually played next to each other, key and tempo, and what you have not used for a while. NXTCue says its ideas come from an AI provider you connect.
Which one works offline?
Deck Caddie works fully offline during a gig after a brief check at launch. NXTCue’s page does not mention offline use; as it relies on an AI provider you configure, check with them if you play without internet.
Which supports more DJ software?
NXTCue lists Serato, rekordbox, VirtualDJ, djay Pro and Mixxx on Windows and macOS. Deck Caddie supports Serato DJ Pro and rekordbox 7, on macOS only. If you use VirtualDJ, djay Pro, Mixxx or Windows, NXTCue is the one that fits.
What does each cost?
NXTCue shows a one-time licence of $19 (a $29 price also appears) for one active device, plus whatever your AI provider charges for usage. Deck Caddie is $39 once for two Macs, or $6.99 a month, with 3 gigs free and no per-use cost.
Can I try Deck Caddie on my own library first?
Yes. The first three gigs are free, with no card and no account. It reads your library read-only and never changes it.
Try it on your own library for three full gigs — no card, no account. It learns from your first night and gets sharper on the second.
